The most fun project I worked on at CU was the Concrete Canoe. Concrete Canoe is an annual competition sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers that involves schools from across the country designing, building, racing and presenting canoes made out of light weight concrete. CU had a period of about four years where we didn’t get a boat to competition, and I got to be part of the first team to bring it back to Boulder. We successfully competed against other Rocky Mountain region schools, many of which had very sophisticated concrete canoe programs, and I helped establish a team that continues to build canoes to this day. I was primarily responsible for the structural analysis and CAD drawings and also got to have the fun of helping pour the concrete. Below are the design papers we submitted for the two years I was involved, and a whole bunch of pictures.
